Barnsley Hospice To Takeover

4 September 2019

Barnsley Hospice are set to takeover Oakwell next weekend when the Reds take on Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

Celebrating their 25th year of service, Barnsley Hospice has provided specialist compassionate care to hundreds of local people every year from all over Barnsley.

The specialist palliative care provided on a daily basis helps and supports people with active and progressive life-limiting illnesses such as Cancer, Heart Disease or Parkinson’s. This care strives to improve quality of life for patients and their families by providing pain and symptom relief, spiritual and social support, and counselling and bereavement services.

Barnsley FC’s Director of Finance and Operations, Robert Zuk, is pleased to welcome the Barnsley Hospice team back to Oakwell for what promises to be a massive fixture.

As a community club, we understand just how important Barnsley Hospice is to the local area. The service that they provide to patients and families alike is inspiring and I’m delighted that we, as a football club, are in a position to showcase that whilst helping them raise vital funds.”

The care at the Hospice is free for patients, but it is not free to provide. They receive funding from NHS Barnsley, but need to raise over £2 million annually to keep running.

Barnsley Hospice rely heavily on the generosity of the public, company donations, legacies, grants, community fundraising events and income from their seven charity shops.

Corporate Fundraiser for Barnsley Hospice, Simon Atkinson, is delighted to be given the opportunity to spread the word.

"As ever, I would like to thank Barnsley FC for allowing us this match takeover day during our special 25th anniversary year. For 25 years now, the Hospice has provided specialist compassionate care to local people and their loved ones from all over Barnsley. Reds fans have been incredibly supportive over the years and I’m sure that trend will continue next weekend.

"Any donation will be gratefully received. Look out for our volunteers and the bright orange buckets dotted around Oakwell from 10.30am to kick-off."
