Sibbick: "We know what we want to achieve."

Young defender hopeful of securing three points in the derby

24 October 2019

Toby Sibbick believes Barnsley have a renewed confidence about them following two hard-earned draws against Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion.

The Reds were perhaps unfortunate not to take maximum points from both encounters against the Sky Bet Championship high-fliers, but performances have been encouraging in recent weeks.

“I feel like we’ve worked on our defensive shape a bit more and we have more structure – we’re harder to beat now,” insisted Sibbick. “I think people thought we weren’t going to get anything from Swansea and West Brom and I think we were a bit unfortunate not to get all three points on Tuesday night, but it’s a good stepping stone for us.

“Everyone has got the confidence on the pitch now. Of course, we can’t press for the full 90 minutes, but we want to press. There’s times where we played our style against West Brom and there’s times where we just had to sit in and be solid, and that made it really tough for them.”

Barnsley make the short trip to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire derby.

The Terriers sit just two places above the Reds, and Sibbick is well aware that all three points this weekend will not just provide another morale boost, but will also lift them above their hosts.

“We know our targets and what we want to achieve, and those points [against Swansea and West Brom] could be massive come the end of the season,” continued the versatile youngster. “We just need to keep pushing and, hopefully, we can put things right on Saturday and get the three points.

“They’re around us and we want to go out there to win, there’s no doubt about that. If we keep playing the way we have been then chances will come our way and, the form our strikers are in, I’m sure we’ll put them in the back of the net.”
