Halme and Schmidt in qualification action

15 October 2019

In the absence of Sky Bet Championship football, two of the Reds’ first team contingency have been on international duty over the past few days.

Both Aapo Halme and Patrick Schmidt have featured for Finland U21s and Austria U21s in their respective UEFA Euro U21 qualifying campaign.

We’ll start with Halme, who has played twice for the Finns as they first recorded a 4-0 victory over Malta at the Veritas Stadion before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Group H leaders Denmark.

Strikes from Jasin-Amin Assehnoun, Benjamin Källman, Onni Valakari and an Andreas Vella own goal gave Finland all three points on Thursday evening, but Nikolas Nartey’s first half goal condemned the Finns to their first group loss four days later.

Those results mean that Halme and co are second in Group H, one point behind Denmark having played one game more.

Elsewhere, Schmidt came off the bench six minutes from time as Austria secured a 3-0 win at home to Turkey on Friday evening.

Nicolas Meister, Marko Raguž and Sandi Lovric were all on target for the hosts at Sonnenseestadion against a Turkish side that finished the game with nine men.

Austria remain top of Group C with three wins from three, but face England at Stadium MK on Tuesday evening.

The Three Lions are second with two wins from their opening two fixtures, and you can watch the game live on BT Sport 1, kick-off at 7:45pm.
