Williams: "It's a really big point on the road."

18 March 2019

Ben Williams insists the 0-0 draw at Doncaster Rovers on Friday will prove to be invaluable as Barnsley continue their push for promotion from Sky Bet League One.

The Reds extended their unbeaten run to 18 games and kept a sixth successive clean sheet in a tense top of the table clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“I thought it was an important point in the end, obviously there’s been a big run of fixtures in a short space of time but we look at the positives and we’re coming back with a clean sheet and a really big point on the road against a team that are up there,” said Williams.

“It was an awkward one with Kenny picking up an injury and we had to shuffle about a bit, so it took us a bit of time to get into our rhythm, but towards the end of the first half and in the second half we looked more like the Barnsley team we’ve been all season.

“We had chances that we could have put away and Davo has made some really good saves to keep another clean sheet on the road, and it’s a good point in the end.”

The young full-back reserved special praise for his teammates, who have stood strong in the face of adversity in recent weeks due to injuries and suspensions.

But with Barnsley utilising their strength in depth and players set to return to the fold, Williams believes the Reds are well-positioned to have a strong end to the campaign.

“We’ve got a few days to recover because it’s been a busy schedule with the three games, but all the lads have been brilliant,” continued the 19-year-old. “We only have one focus at the moment and that’s to get promoted, so we take each game as it comes.

“We don’t worry about the next game or where we’re going to pick the next point up; we just concentrate on our own games.

“We’re still in a really good position and we know that if we can win every game between now and the end of the season then we’ll be promoted. But we’re just focussing on our own games – we’re not concentrating on anyone else.”
