Sibbick: "It's the right time for me to come here."

2 July 2019

Barnsley’s latest summer signing Toby Sibbick is eager to impress at his new home.

The versatile defender caught the eye last season while at AFC Wimbledon, helping the Dons to secure their Sky Bet League One status in dramatic style.

Now he will be plying his trade in the Championship as the Reds look to build on their 2018/19 promotion-winning campaign.

“I’m very happy,” stated Sibbick. “One of my ambitions is to play at the highest level and I feel that Barnsley has given me that chance. The club is massive and hopefully we can do something great in the Championship next season.

“It’s exciting; I came here last season when we [AFC Wimbledon] got a 0-0 draw and the atmosphere was great; the fans got behind the team to try and get the win, but luckily for the team I was playing for then, we got the draw.”

At just 20-years-old, Sibbick arrives at Oakwell with his best years ahead of him and to play under a Head Coach who will allow him to thrive.

Daniel Stendel’s exciting brand of football has a habit of getting the best out of players, and the young defender is relishing the prospect of taking to the field once the season gets underway.

“I can tell that the gaffer likes to get on the ball and get his team to pass the ball, that’s the impression I get,” continued Sibbick. “I’ve spoken to Brad Collins and Victor Adeboyejo, who I know, and they’ve said that the gaffer likes to get the ball on the floor and that’s how I want to play as well.

“I like to think that I’m athletic and good on the ball, I like to pass out and maybe nick a goal here or there, and hopefully the fans will see that in the future. I can play right-back or centre-back – wherever the gaffer wants me to play.”

Sibbick in action

Sibbick made his Football League debut back in April 2017 as the Dons drew 0-0 with Peterborough United. He followed that up a fortnight later with another stalemate against Oldham Athletic at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

His first goals for Wimbledon came in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur U23s in the Checkatrade Trophy. The explosive defender also found the net in last season’s Emirates FA Cup fourth round win against Premier League outfit West Ham United.

“It was a great moment for me to come on and score the winner; it was just an unbelievable feeling and I’m hoping to knuckle down now and create many more moments like that for Barnsley,” insisted Sibbick.

“I think it’s the right time for me to come here. At times in football, you have to come out of your comfort zone and I’m doing that at a young age and living away from home, but I feel that it’s a test that I can rise to and, hopefully, I can do it on the pitch.”
