Highly-rated defender arrives at Oakwell.
We are delighted to announce that Toby Sibbick has joined Barnsley Football Club from AFC Wimbledon, on a four-year contract with the option of a further year in the club’s favour.
The 20-year-old defender has shown his versatility and a strong understanding of the game by being able to operate comfortably both in central defence and on the right-hand side of defence, showing a mature approach at a young age.
After playing 31 times for AFC Wimbledon during the 2018/19 campaign, the 6ft 3' Londoner helped his side to a ‘great escape’ style season, avoiding relegation when it looked all but certain. During a memorable campaign, Toby produced on a national stage by scoring a dramatic tie clinching goal against Premier League West Ham United in the Emirates FA Cup.
He now becomes the club’s sixth summer addition and after signing his contract, Toby spoke with iFollow Barnsley.
He said: “I can tell that the gaffer likes to get on the ball and get his team to pass the ball, that’s the impression I get,” continued Sibbick. “I’ve spoken to Brad Collins and Victor Adeboyejo, who I know, and they’ve said that the gaffer likes to get the ball on the floor and that’s how I want to play as well.
“I like to think that I’m athletic and good on the ball, I like to pass out and maybe nick a goal here or there, and hopefully the fans will see that in the future. I can play right-back or centre-back – wherever the gaffer wants me to play.”
Co-Chairman Paul Conway was pleased to see another talented young player arrive at the club, ahead of the pre-season schedule beginning.
He said: “We are really thrilled to add Toby to our dynamic incoming class from this window. He has shown great promise at a high level at a very young age, a core element of our overall strategy. Toby is our sixth signing of the summer, with more exciting signings to come.”
