Styles: "I'm buzzing - the Championship is next level!"

Reds midfielder excited for new campaign

30 July 2019

Callum Styles is relishing the prospect of embarking upon his first campaign in the Sky Bet Championship.

The diminutive midfielder has experienced League Two and League One football so far in his career – catching the eye with Bury, which prompted the Reds to sign him in August 2018.

After spending the first half of last season on loan with the Shakers, Styles returned to Oakwell for the remainder of Barnsley’s promotion push, featuring seven times for Daniel Stendel.

“I’m buzzing,” exclaimed the 19-year-old. “It’s a different level – it’s different gravy! League One is a good standard but the Championship is next level so I can’t wait.

“Last season was great, we were winning games and I was coming on while we were playing good football, so it was a joy to be in the team and win games.”

Styles has enjoyed a productive summer with the Reds – notching his first goal for the club in our first pre-season friendly against Stalybridge Celtic, before impressing while in France and Germany.

However, the playmaker has had a minor setback that ruled him out of Saturday’s encounter with Sheffield United, but he is hopeful of being fit for the season opener against Fulham this weekend.

“I was feeling good – I’ve just picked up a slight injury, but I’m working hard to get back on the pitch and hopefully start the season,” continued Styles. “I’m hoping to be in contention for the first game, it just depends on how my back settles down, but I’m pushing hard for it.”

Naturally, any attacking player is going to thrive under the tutelage of Stendel. The Reds’ Head Coach encourages an offensive brand of football and it is an aspect that Styles has enjoyed during his time at Oakwell.

“The gaffer loves to play forward and attack, and it’s just good to be around,” insisted the midfielder. “We’re not tentative and we go at teams, so it’s great.”
