Thiam: "We have to be focussed on the game."

17 January 2019

Mamadou Thiam has targeted more goals as he aims to fire Barnsley to promotion from Sky Bet League One this campaign.

The explosive Reds’ forward has made a habit of scoring the spectacular this season, with stunning strikes at home to Luton Town and Charlton Athletic in particular standing out.

His howitzer against the Addicks proved to decisive in our 2-1 triumph at the back end of December and went onto win the Club’s Goal of the Month award.

And with Barnsley currently on a six-game unbeaten streak, Thiam insists the squad are looking to extend that run in order to achieve their goals in May.

“It’s a great thing to be unbeaten and we want to go up, so we have to keep doing it,” said the pacey forward. “The manager has told me to continue what I’m doing and to be confident; hopefully I can score a few more goals.

“We know that it’s possible to do so we need to work and be focussed on our results – not other teams. When you see the table, it’s possible that we can win promotion.

“I think it’s our moment because we’re unbeaten in the last games – we need to continue like this. The other teams know what Barnsley are about and we just need to keep working hard.”

Barnsley travel to bottom of the table AFC Wimbledon on Saturday knowing that victory could potentially leave them one point outside the automatic promotion spots, depending on results elsewhere.

However, the Dons have already proved to be tricky opposition this season after grinding out a goalless draw at Oakwell back in August – the only team to have stopped the Reds from scoring on home soil.

“We have to be focussed on the game because I think playing football in England is not like playing football in any other country,” continued Thiam. “You can be bottom of the league and beat the top of the table, so we just have to be focussed and not think of them as bottom; if we think like that, we will lose this game.

“This is football – you can’t be on top all season, so, at the moment, we’re playing a lot better and working hard in training, there’s more concentration and results are good again. Team spirit is important because we can’t stay on top all the time but, when we are, we have been winning games.”
