Brown: "It shows a lot of maturity."

30 January 2019

Following his 'Man of the Match' display against Oxford United on Tuesday evening, Jacob Brown believes Barnsley are showing experience beyond their years as they continue their push for promotion.

The Reds trailed 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium but fought back to claim a crucial point thanks to goals from Mamadou Thiam and top scorer Kieffer Moore.

“It shows a lot of maturity in the side even though we’re a young team,” said Brown. “I think, mentally, we are very mature; a lot of teams could go 2-0 down and crumble from there, but we’ve kept going, stuck to our game plan and got two goals.

“There’s been a few games where we’ve been behind – like Scunthorpe earlier this season and Rochdale the other day, but we always know that if we keep fighting ‘til the end there’s always a chance we’ll get a result and once we got that first goal we knew we could get a second, and we could have got a third as well.”

Barnsley are now unbeaten in their last nine Sky Bet League One outings, picking up 21 points over the course of a run that stretches back to mid-December.

Results elsewhere on Tuesday evening meant that the Reds could have occupied one of the automatic promotion spots with a victory over Oxford, but Brown, who provided two assists against the U’s, insists playing teams near the foot of the table isn’t as simple as it seems.

“It’s the same with all games – Rochdale did well against us,” continued the young forward. “Against Oxford, people were thinking Barnsley are going to win and it’s not that easy. When you’re on the pitch, you’ve got to put your all in – no matter who you’re against – and luckily, we managed to get a point.

“Every game we’re playing now we just want to win and put pressure on everyone around us to get those automatic spots. But, when you’re 2-0 down, to manage to get a point from the game – obviously it’s not a win – but you can take a lot of positives from it.

“Even though we didn’t win the game, we’ve kept the unbeaten run going and it gives us massive confidence going into the next game.”
