U23s | PREVIEW: Coventry Vs Barnsley

Young Reds face first test of new campaign

11 August 2019

Barnsley U23s begin their Professional Development League campaign away at Coventry City on Monday afternoon.

The young Reds, fresh off the back of a productive summer, will be looking to continue their fine form from the 2018/19 season when they ended the term 12 games unbeaten.

In that run were impressive victories against high-flying Burnley and Crewe Alexandra, and a sensational dismantling of Colchester United in early March. Barnsley also recorded their first win of the campaign against the Sky Blues as Tai-Reece Chisholm scored the game’s solitary goal at the Oakwell Training Ground in September.

Prior to that, the young Reds had thrashed Coventry 5-1 at the tail end of the 2017/18 season. In fact, our U23s have won three of the previous four meetings dating back to November 2014.

However, after finishing as runners-up in the south league last time out, City will be hoping to go one better this term.

Jason Farndon’s side were eliminated in the play-off semi-finals by eventual winners Leeds United having picked up 30 points from their last 14 outings.

In David Bremang, the Sky Blues have a forward who is clinical in front of goal. The 19-year-old featured on the bench for City’s first team at Luton Town last season and scored 10 times for the U23s.

There could be competitive debuts for striker Chris Sang and midfield duo Keaton Ward and Alex Wollerton, who joined Barnsley this summer after impressing while on trial at Oakwell.

You can see how Martin Devaney’s side fare by attending the game at the Alan Higgs Centre, kick-off at 1pm. Alternatively, you can follow updates on our official Academy Twitter account: @AcademyBFC.
