Carabao Cup exit for the Reds

13 August 2019

Barnsley were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle after suffering a 3-0 defeat against Carlisle United on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Harry McKirdy, Jack Bridge, from the spot, and Nathan Thomas were enough to see the visitors through at Oakwell.

The Reds made seven changes from the weekend and started brightly, with Cauley Woodrow forcing a good reflex save from Adam Collin in the United net.

Callum Styles and Mallik Wilks also came close with long range efforts as the hosts looked to force the issue.

But Carlisle soon grew into the game and debutant Brad Collins pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the Cumbrians at bay.

First, the summer signing plunged to his right to deny McKirdy before blocking Ryan Loft’s effort when the striker was played through one-on-one. The Reds’ stopper then denied Thomas at his near post and followed that up by acrobatically tipping away Loft’s clever attempt.

The opening goal eventually came as McKirdy latched onto a loose pass and confidently slotted beyond the onrushing Collins midway through the first half.

Barnsley searched for an equaliser and came close to getting it when Conor Chaplin stung the hands of Collin, while Jordan Williams saw a low shot cleared off the line.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0-1 Carlisle United

Despite making a bright start to the second half, the Reds were unable to find a way through a resolute visiting backline, with Thiam and Williams fizzing dangerous balls across the face of goal.

But the Cumbrians doubled their lead 12 minutes after the restart when Bridge casually converted a penalty following a foul on the ever-dangerous McKirdy.

Woodrow almost halved the deficit moments later when he stooped to head Wilks’ driven cross onto the upright.

However, the tie was effectively over as a contest just after the hour mark when Thomas won possession deep in the Barnsley half and drove into the area before firing into the far bottom corner.

Carlisle came close to adding a fourth late on, but substitute Aaron Hayden’s close-range effort ricocheted of the post.

Attention now turns to Saturday and the visit of Charlton Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship.
