PREVIEW: Birmingham City Vs Barnsley

The inside track on the Reds' trip to St. Andrew's

20 August 2019

The Reds are in the second city in our latest Sky Bet Championship clash, and here's your preview of the trip to face Birmingham City.

After the weekend's draw against Charlton at Oakwell, the Reds are back on the road on Tuesday evening, making the trip to St. Andrew's to take on Birmingham City.

The point achieved on Saturday will have felt like a defeat for those in red, with the Addicks striking a late leveller after a contentious penalty award.

Reds V Charlton

So it's a win, a defeat and a draw to open the 2019/20 season, four points on the board prior to this midweek clash with Blues.

On the injury front, Barnsley had to make do without Alex Mowatt in a league fixture for the first time in over 12 months in that 2-2 draw against Charlton. The midfielder faces a late fitness test if he's to make a sooner than expected return in Birmingham.

Head Coach, Daniel Stendel will still be without both Kenny Dougall and Jacob Brown, with the pair expected to return to training by the end of the month with an eye on football after the international break.

New signing Patrick Schmidt was an unused substitute at the weekend and he could be in line for a Reds debut at St. Andrew's. However, with both Cauley Woodrow and Conor Chaplin off the mark against Charlton, competition for a spot up front is fierce.

The Austrian U21 international spoke with the press in midweek, as did First Team Coach Chris Stern, and both of their pre-match thoughts are available to watch over on iFollow Barnsley.

In terms of Tuesday night's opposition, Birmingham City come into this one following a 3-0 thumping at Nottingham Forest.

After an opening day victory at Brentford, Blues were humbled away at Portsmouth 3-0 in the Carabao Cup whilst then getting a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City. So like the Reds, they're looking for a first three points since the opening day of the season.

Pep Clotet

Led by Spaniard Pep Clotet, Blues have a number of former Reds in their 2019/20 squad.

Barnsley-born centre half Marc Roberts is back in favour at St. Andrew's, and former loanees Gary Gardner and Dan Crowley are both expected to start in Blues' midfield.

The Reds' recent record at the home of Birmingham is a pleasant one.

You've to go back to 2008 for our last defeat at St. Andrew's. There have been three victories and two draws there since then. The 5-0 hammering back in September of 2012 was memorable of course, as was a 3-0 victory in December of 2016.

Our most famous result at the home of Blues though would have to be the 4-0 thrashing in the year 2000, a playoff semi final 1st leg result that shocked everyone in attendance as the Reds would go on to make it to Wembley for the first time in their history.

2000

But Birmingham City do have the edge head-to-head historically. 37 wins chalked up to Barnsley's 24.

Tickets for the trip are still on sale, and you can pay on the day at St. Andrew's too. For those unable to make it, we will have LIVE coverage for all viewers, at home or overseas, via iFollow Barnsley. With Matt Bailey and a very special guest on the mic, four-camera footage, instant replays, for as little as £5 for a match pass (overseas) you can cheer on the Reds from the comfort of your front room.
