Williams: "We know what the gaffer wants."

Young full-back confident ahead of the weekend

Ben Williams says the Reds need to stick together ahead of our Sky Bet Championship clash with Luton Town on Saturday.

Barnsley are looking to bounce back from the midweek defeat at Birmingham City, while the Hatters have lost three consecutive games since claiming an opening day draw against Middlesbrough.

However, the young full-back insists that our form at Oakwell is reason to be optimistic heading into the weekend.

“We had a good run last season at home – going unbeaten in the league,” said Williams. “Fulham was an unbelievable result, especially seeing what they’re doing now.

“We’ve played a few decent teams already this season and we’ve got Luton on Saturday, which we’re very much looking forward to. With the quality we’ve got in the team, there’s nothing to worry about.

“We looked to use that momentum from the Fulham game to move forward and get a decent place in the league. But we know it’s a tough league and every team is of a really high quality, and I think now it’s just a case of sticking together. Results will definitely come.”

Four points from the first four games of the new campaign represents a healthy return for Barnsley following promotion from League One last season.

It could have been different had the Reds managed to hold onto all three points against Charlton Athletic last weekend, but Williams insists it is too early in the season to start thinking about potentially being under pressure.

“We’re still a young group and close knit,” continued the 20-year-old. “We know what the gaffer wants – there’s no question what he wants from us.

“We were unlucky on Saturday not to get all three points, which puts us in a different situation and we’ll move on from that. On Tuesday night, the performance up to 70 minutes was good and, after the goal, it went a bit downwards.

“I wouldn’t say there’s pressure this early on in the season – one win can move you so many places up the table.

“I know Luton have performed well and results haven’t gone their way but, with our home form, we’re definitely in a good position to go into the game with a lot of hope and confidence.”
