Liverpool Feds 4-5 Barnsley FC Ladies!

18 September 2018

After a disappointing result in midweek with a 2-1 loss against Brighouse Town, the Ladies in red bounced back with a fantastic result against the league runners up from last season, the Liverpool Feds.

Not many teams will travel to Liverpool and come away with a win. We fell behind to a penalty after 15 minutes and were still feeling the after effects of only being allowed a ten-minute warm up, due to heavy traffic on the M62.

On 36 minutes, Drew Greene picked up a loose ball in midfield and threaded an inch perfect pass through to striker Lissa Woodhouse. With still plenty to do, Woodhouse took the ball forward and hit an unstoppable shot low passed the diving keeper to give the Reds a one-goal lead.

Lifted by the goal Barnsley grew in confidence and just before half time, Sophie Bell's persistence paid off when she managed to head across to Woodhouse who then netted her second of the game.

The second half started, but it was Liverpool that started stronger. The home side equalised on 52' which prompted Barnsley Manager, Chris Hamilton to make his first change.

On came Amy Woodruff and with nearly her first touch she hit a great right footed shot that flew, high into the Liverpool net. What an impact the substitution had made, but in an end to end game it wasn't long before the home side levelled again. The Barnsley defence were slow to push out from a clearance, allowing the Feds’ forward-line to finish easily, making it 3-3!

With 15 minutes to go it was Woodruff again to find the back of the net, when she won the ball in midfield and raced clear. With the goalkeeper to beat, Woodruff hit her second goal of the game.

The Reds were now in command and the pressure showed by being awarded a penalty. Midfielder Kath Smith slotted the ball home to give the Ladies in red a 3-5 lead. Liverpool then pulled one back with the last kick of the game, but it wasn't enough, and the points were deservedly coming back to South Yorkshire. The first three points of the season were gained and it was great to see what it meant to both players and staff.
