PREVIEW: Barnsley Vs Plymouth Argyle

2 October 2018

We're back in Sky Bet League One action on Tuesday evening as the Reds face the Pilgrims here at Oakwell!

Following on from Saturday's terrific result at the seaside where Daniel Stendel's side emerged as 3-1 winners over Joey Barton's Fleetwood Town, it's back to Oakwell tonight as we welcome Plymouth Argyle for a 7.45pm kick off.

The Reds are back into 5th position in the Sky Bet League One table following the weekend's three-point haul.

Visitors Plymouth went down 3-2 at Home Park the same afternoon to our near-neighbours Doncaster Rovers and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Plymouth Fans

After a near-miss last season, The Pilgrims entered this season with promotion very much the target for Derek Adams’ side. However, after an incredibly tough start to the season, Plymouth find themselves bottom of the table with just three points from 10 games.

The Pilgrims are yet to win a league game this season and have picked up just one point away from home - this was a 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers on the 8th September.

Most notably, Plymouth have struggled in front of goal having scored just five goals in Sky Bet League One this season. This lack of firepower indicates the reason for their current situation.

However, despite their bad start to the season, Derek Adams will be hoping he can turn it around. As many Reds will know from our own last season at this level, early season form is easily reversible.

Derek Adams

Former Motherwell midfielder, Derek Adams is the man in charge at Home park. Having also played for the likes of Aberdeen, Burnley and Ross County, Adams brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Upon retiring in 2009, he remained in charge at Ross County where he had been in a player/manager role since 2010. Having taken a year as assistant at Hibernian, Adams returned to manage County in 2011 and remained there for three years.

In 2015 he was appointed Plymouth manager and has overseen their rise from Sky Bet League Two to Sky Bet League One. With a strong campaign last term, Adams was hoping his side could kick on and again challenge for promotion but things have been tough so far this season.

Adam Hammill scores against Plymouth in 2009

Barnsley went to Plymouth in the Championship back in 2009 and needed a result to ensure their survival, with goals from Adam Hammill and Jamal Campbell-Ryce securing a 2-1 victory.

However, the last time the two sides met at Oakwell, it was the Pilgrims, in 2010 who ran out 3-1 winners despite Hugo Colace giving the Reds the lead. Goals in the second from Carl Fletcher, Jamie Mackie and Rory Fallon turned the match around for Argyle.

Historically speaking, that was Plymouth's 18th victory over the Reds. If Barnsley win tonight though, it would be our 18th win against the Pilgrims.

If you can't be with us at Oakwell tonight, iFollow Barnsley will have all of the action with LIVE commentary and streaming for both UK and overseas subscribers.
