Winkler: "The team will show us a reaction."

24 October 2018

On a tough evening for the Reds in Shropshire, Andreas Winkler gave his thoughts to us post-match.

The Assistant Head Coach believes the poor start cost Barnsley at the Montgomery Waters Meadow last night.

Going behind inside 90 seconds put the Reds on the back foot and a deflected second goal made it an even harder task going into the break.

“We didn’t have a good start and Shrewsbury tried to bring us out of our plan,” Winkler said.

“It was not a good performance and the result was probably deserved. We were very disappointed to concede from a set-piece for the third goal.

“But I’m confident that the team will show a reaction in the next game.”

The Reds will return to Oakwell this Saturday, for the first of five consecutive home fixtures.

Barnsley welcome Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One for a 3pm kick off and it could prove an ideal time to get back to winning ways with The Gas currently struggling for form themselves.

Winkler remains confident in the players, telling us: “We have a good squad, we have a good bench, more players will be available for us and we have to do it for our supporters against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

“They have travelled down in numbers in both games, they deserve rewarding.

"I believe in the team because I know what they can do," Winkler continued.

“We got ourselves back into it, it was in a perfect moment, five minutes after half time, and then you have 40 minutes to go for a goal or maybe two.

"We were very disappointed after that, losing a goal to a set-piece to the far post. They win the header and then they go on.

"I don’t think we had a good start in the first half and our opponents made us play their style - very hard duels, direct play and on this occasion we couldn't cope.

“It was not a good performance from us.”
