Zeki Fryers feels the competition for places will help Barnsley push on as they aim to secure promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship this season.
The full-back scored the Reds’ second against Notts County in the Emirates FA Cup first round on Saturday and also feels that a cup run could provide positive momentum going forward.
“There’s a lot of competition in the team now and we’re all challenging each other for positions,” said Fryers. “The lads have been doing brilliant and if we can continue that with the depth in our squad then there’s no reason why we can’t finish and go for it.
“It’s a given that you do well in the league and try to get promoted – we’ve got the squad to do that. A cup run is a bonus and that would be brilliant; it has a massive following. If we can do well and get a draw against a big team then that’s what you want.”
Saturday’s 4-0 win against the Magpies ensured Daniel Stendel’s side are in the hat for Monday evening’s second round draw.
It was also Fryers’ second outing of the campaign following his return from injury, and the 26-year-old is eager to get more minutes under his belt and help the team challenge on all fronts – even if that means playing in unfamiliar positions.
“I’m delighted with the win; the lads did well,” continued the Reds’ full-back. “It’s my second 90 minutes in a week, so my legs started to feel it but I’m delighted to be getting the game time and I’m trying to get as fit as I can now I’m back from injury.
“I’ve been going in between centre-back and left-back and, when you’re at left-back, you’re entitled to get forward – sometimes you carry on your run and find yourself in an area where you can score and that goal was an example.
“I’m just happy to play, really, because I’ve been injured for a little while; it’s been very frustrating. My main position is left-back, but, if I’ve got to play somewhere else, I’ll do it.”
