Jacob Brown believes Barnsley have shown that they have the ability to grind out results.
The Reds’ forward has two goals to his name this season – both in games that his side have won comfortably – but insists last weekend’s win over Bristol Rovers was exactly the response Barnsley needed following a tough few days.
“After the couple of bad performances, we knew we needed to get the win – regardless of how well we played,” said Brown. “We could have played better, but we were happy to get the win.
“We haven’t really had many results like that; when we’ve won, we’ve played well and overrun teams. But to get a result like that shows we can win either way – whether it’s scrappy or not. I think we needed a win like that.”
Ahead of this weekend’s Sky Bet League One clash with Southend United, Brown has spoken of his delight at featuring on a regular basis.
The versatile 20-year-old spent time out on loan at Chesterfield last season and feels the experience of first team football in League Two was hugely beneficial for his development.
“Going out on loan last season helped me in terms of getting men’s football – the standard is much higher,” continued Brown. “Now, every day in training, I’m learning more and the gaffer is giving me advice as well.
“This season is already miles better than I was expecting – I wasn’t expecting to be involved as much as I have been. To get my first and second goals so soon after one another was great and, even in the games I’ve not scored, I think I’ve played well and worked hard.
“If we were still in the Championship it would have been very hard to get some game time but, even with the squad we’ve got now, it’s still been difficult. Being in League One has given me more of a chance now now we just want to get out of League One and hopefully I can continue if we get promoted.”
