Barnsley Hospice Take Over

19 November 2018

Barnsley Hospice will take over Oakwell when the Reds play host to Doncaster Rovers in Sky Bet League One this weekend.

Barnsley Hospice and Barnsley Football Club work together on numerous events throughout the year to help raise awareness and funds for the Hospice, helping them to provide specialist compassionate care to patients and their families in Barnsley, meaning the connection between the two parties is growing ever stronger.

Since the Hospice opened its doors in 1994, their work has touched the lives of thousands of local people with life limiting illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s and motor neurone disease.

The care at the Hospice is free for patients, but it is not free to provide. They gratefully receive funding from NHS Barnsley, but still need to raise over £2 million every year to keep running. Barnsley Hospice rely heavily on public and company donations, legacies, grants, community fundraising events and income from their seven charity shops and all of this funding must come from within the borough of Barnsley.

Reds Head Coach, Daniel Stendel, visited the Hospice recently.

“The work that the team do is truly inspiring. The staff take care to make sure both families and patients are comfortable with their situation and this is simply incredible to see. As Head Coach, I'm proud that the Club have an association with something so important to the community. We will all be very happy to see them come to Oakwell and hope they raise vital funds they need, I was very shocked when I saw the amount they needed to raise.”

Sam Silverwood, Fundraising Manager at Barnsley Hospice said.

“It's always real pleasure to have staff and players from Barnsley FC visit us here at the Hospice. We have always been very grateful for the support we have received from the Club and our patients, families, staff and volunteers always look forward to such occasions. The club is at the heart of our community and the support they show the Hospice helps us to continue to provide specialist end of life care each and every year to the people of Barnsley.”

Donations can be made at the Hospice, at any of our charity shops or over the phone on Barnsley 244244.
