U23s | Preview: SWFC vs Reds

29 March 2018

Barnsley U23s face Sheffield Wednesday in a South Yorkshire derby on Good Friday - four hours before the first team host Bristol City at Oakwell.

The young Reds will make the short journey to Middlewood Road, Wednesday’s training ground, for an 11am kick-off looking to build on their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace last week.

Paul Harsley’s side were unfortunate not to take all three points from their encounter with the Eagles, with Victor Adeboyejo, Amir Berkovits and Louis Wardle all coming close to breaking the deadlock.

That result ended a run of four straight defeats for the young Reds, who have performed admirably against tough, experienced opposition in recent weeks with no reward.

The Owls, coached by former Barnsley defender Neil Thompson, are currently second in the Professional Development League North and come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win over Coventry City on Monday.

Before that victory, Wednesday had only won once in their previous ten outings - conceding 20 goals in the process.

It finished 1-1 when the two sides met back in October, with Warren Clarke’s equaliser just before the hour mark cancelling out Cameron McGeehan’s first half opener.

With four goals to his name, Clarke is the Owls’ joint top scorer this season as Thompson’s side look to share the goal scoring responsibilities around. Bulgarian forward Preslav Borukov has also scored four times, along with first team regular Lucas João.
