Daniel Stendel Appointed Head Coach!

6 June 2018

Reds confirm German on a two-year deal.

Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Daniel Stendel as the Club’s new Head Coach, following an extensive recruitment process.

A new era has dawned upon Oakwell as the Club look to have a strong season in Sky Bet League One with the clear goal of automatic promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship. A Head Coach with a clear strategy and philosophy has been identified in order to express the desire of the board, the players and the fans of Barnsley Football Club.

44-year-old Stendel arrives with a high-profile reputation within German football and has been developing a strong work-ethic of progressing the talents of young players whilst playing a high-intensity, attacking style of football. Stendel likes his players to be exceedingly fit and use a counter-pressing system against the opposition at all opportunities. This enables his side to win the ball back seconds after losing it and move into the attacking third of the pitch at every available possibility. During his time with Hannover 96, Stendel’s side managed 50 goals in 28 games, showing the attacking nature of his coaching style.

His experience of implementing a style and philosophy came to fruition at Hannover 96, with whom the new Barnsley Head Coach played nearly 200 matches for during a 14 year career. Appointed as the lead of the Bundesliga side in 2016, Stendel boasted a 54% win ratio in just under a year in charge.

Daniel Stendel has signed a two-year contract at Oakwell and will begin his reign on July 1st. Announcements regarding his backroom staff will follow in the coming days, along with the Club’s pre-season schedule.

After signing his contract at Oakwell to become the new man leading the Club, Daniel Stendel spoke to barnsleyfc.co.uk.

He said: “I am very happy to join Barnsley Football Club and I am happy with the faith, trust and belief shown to me from everyone here in advance of me starting the role. I’m fully motivated and excited to get going, I am ready to meet the players and fans during pre-season.

“Over the last couple of days I got the feeling that the responsible people within the club have the same vision about playing the game as I have. I get the overall feeling that everything is fitting together, we’re all thinking in the same direction and that was a main reason for me signing. I’ve got the view that the way in which I want to reach success, is mirrored by the people in charge. That is really important and made my decision an easy one. It’s really important to want to be successful, but if you only want to be and don’t have a plan of how to be, it won’t work. At Barnsley there is a plan, that is very clear and it becomes a pathway to success.”

Chief Executive Gauthier Ganaye was delighted to appoint and welcome Daniel to Barnsley Football Club, speaking to barnsleyfc.co.uk.

We’ve identified that the counter-press has been used by the most successful teams in the world and Daniel is one of the best coaches at doing that.

“The whole Board of Directors at the Club were involved during the process of appointing Daniel in the role of Head Coach. We identified him as a candidate as he’s a coach that has a style of play that matches the mentality of club and town, it’s attacking with flair and high intensity designed to press the opposition. As well as the style, Daniel has the philosophy of using and developing younger players which fits perfectly in our model too.

“This is a new era and one we hope will be an exciting one for everyone connected to Barnsley Football Club. I look forward to Daniel moving over here and beginning his hard work as well as showing his enthusiastic personality to the town!”
