Barnsley 2-0 Swindon Town | 6 August 2005

20 June 2018

The fixtures for 2018/19 are close to being released! Take a trip down memory lane with an opening day to remember.

After three disappointing seasons in the third tier of English football, Barnsley began the 2005/06 campaign at home to Swindon Town.

A little over 9,000 fans were in attendance at Oakwell as the Reds got their promotion bid off to the perfect start with a 2-0 victory, courtesy of goals in either half from Paul Hayes and Chris Shuker.

Hayes’ deft lob put Andy Ritchie’s side ahead following a quick counter-attack, before Daniel Nardiello saw his penalty saved by Rhys Evans after Sean O’Hanlon had hauled Hayes down inside the area.

Nardiello then turned provider after the interval when he played through Shuker, who rifled his shot into the far corner to double Barnsley’s lead.

Robbie Williams was shown a straight red card by referee Tony Leake for deliberate handball, as he diverted Jamie Cureton’s goal-bound effort on the line.

From the resulting penalty, much-travelled striker Cureton was denied by the legs of Nick Colgan as Barnsley held on to claim all three points on the opening day.

The Reds would go on to claim promotion from League One with a dramatic play-off victory over Swansea City, while the Robins suffered relegation to League Two.

The 2018/19 Sky Bet League One fixture release date is nearly upon us! Fans will be able to find out who we are playing and more importantly, when, on Thursday 21st June at 9am!
