Barnsley 4-1 Leeds United | 31 December 2011

22 June 2018

Our schedule is in place for the upcoming Sky Bet League One campaign after the fixtures were released on Thursday morning, and we travel Luton Town on New Year's Day. Here, we look back at a classic New Year's encounter with Leeds United in the 2011/12 season.

Ricardo Vaz Té proved to be the hero as Barnsley romped to a festive demolition derby over Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Oakwell.

The Portuguese forward netted a memorable hat-trick as the Reds ended 2011 on a high as they thumped their neighbours on home soil for the second consecutive season, following the 5-2 rout in 2010.

Craig Davies was also on target for Keith Hill’s men, while Luciano Becchio netted a scant consolation goal for the beleaguered visitors in the dying embers.

Brought on for the injured Jacob Butterfield at the quarter hour mark, Vaz Té took no time to make his mark on the game as he fired in from the edge of the area shortly after his introduction.

The striker, who had joined Barnsley on a free transfer at the start of the season following his release from Hibernian, scored his second six minutes after the interval as he turned home a corner.

Davies then curled home a magnificent third for the Reds from the corner of the box before Vaz Té completed his hat-trick as he embarked on a mazy run from the left flank and poked the ball past Andy Lonergan.

Becchio’s flicked header at the death proved to be little more than a formality as Barnsley claimed bragging rights on an unforgettable afternoon at Oakwell.

The Reds ended the campaign eight points clear of relegation, while Leeds finished 14th in the Championship.
