Barnsley 3-3 Stoke City | 26 December 2007

The fixtures for 2018/19 are close to being released! Take a trip down memory lane with a thrilling Boxing Day clash.

Barnsley welcomed high-flying Stoke City to South Yorkshire as both sides shared six goals in a Christmas cracker at Oakwell.

It proved to be a particularly busy afternoon for referee Trevor Kettle, who awarded three penalties and brandished nine yellow cards and a red card.

The Reds led three times through Brian Howard and two Jon Macken goals, but were unable to hang on for a much-needed victory as Liam Lawrence netted a hat-trick to claim a share of the spoils for Stoke.

Howard put Barnsley ahead from the spot after Macken had been bundled over in the area, before Lawrence levelled eight minutes later as he converted from 12-yards.

Midway through the second half, Macken took advantage of slack defending from the Potters to head home from close range as the Reds re-established their lead.

However, promotion-chasing Stoke continued to push for an equaliser and, having already rattled the bar from 30-yards, Lawrence bagged his second as he rounded off a well-worked free-kick routine with six minutes remaining.

There was still more drama to come, and it appeared as though Macken had sealed all three points for the Reds as he instinctively prodded home Kayode Odejayi’s header.

But when Steve Foster was shown a second yellow card for fouling Ricardo Fuller, the visitors had one last opportunity to snatch a point. Lawrence’s free-kick caused panic in the Barnsley box and Kettle pointed to the spot for the third time as John Eustace’s shot struck the arm of Sam Togwell.

Lawrence made no mistake as he confidently despatched the resulting penalty to claim a dramatic equaliser for Stoke in injury time.

The Reds went on to finish 18th in the Championship, while Tony Pulis’ side won automatic promotion to the Premier League.
