Defender has committed his immediate future to the Reds.
19-year-old Will Smith has signed a one-year contract extension until the end of the 2018/19 season.
Smith has progressed through the youth set-up at Oakwell and has been rewarded for impressive performances, as well as his attitude towards the game. As well as being a regular starter in the U23s last season, Will has also captained the Reds on occasions throughout the years he has been at Oakwell.
Smith - a defensive player who can operate comfortably at the heart of defence, as well as a deep-lying midfielder - was named the 2015/16 ‘Academy Player of the Season.’ Graduating into the U23s side at the end of the 2016/17 season, he is now a regular in the development side.
Smith gave his thoughts to barnsleyfc.co.uk after signing the deal: “I’m pleased to have signed and I’m just looking forward to getting started now. It’s been a tough pre-season so far. I played out of position quite a lot last season, but learnt a lot as well. This year I’m hoping to play my natural position throughout.”
“I’m looking forward to this season and I’m going to try and get in the manager’s thoughts, and try and get in the first team.”
