U23s | Reds Travel To Guiseley

30 July 2018

Barnsley U23s play their penultimate pre-season friendly when they travel to Guiseley AFC on Tuesday evening.

Martin Devaney’s side were beaten 2-0 by Sunderland in their last outing, but left the Academy of Light in high spirits after what was a very promising performance.

Prior to that, the young Reds had beaten Hemsworth Miners Welfare 4-3, while several players featured in a Reds XI side that lost 4-2 against Athersley Rec.

Last season, Guiseley were relegated from the National League – finishing bottom of the table, 16 points from safety.

The Lions will compete in the National League North this campaign, along with York City who our first team thrashed 7-1 earlier this summer.

As of last season, Guiseley’s ranks boasted former England youth international Lee Molyneux and former Republic of Ireland international Sean St Ledger, but both left following the club’s relegation.

However, Ex-Reds striker Kayode Odejayi, who scored that famous FA Cup goal against Chelsea at Oakwell in 2008, is still with the Lions and could well be in action on Tuesday.

In charge at Nethermoor Park is former Queens Park Rangers defender Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill, who share managerial responsibilities.

You can see how the U23s get on against Guiseley by attending the game; prices are £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and £1 for U11s. Alternatively, you can follow the action on our official Academy Twitter account: @AcademyBFC. Kick-off is at 7:45pm.
