U23s REPORT: Barnsley 3-1 Leeds Utd

26 January 2018

Paul Harsley's young side recorded a fine victory at Oakwell this afternoon, seeing off neighbours Leeds United 3-1.

It was a very young lineup fielded by Harsley, with the only unusual selection being the Trialist picked to play on the left wing.

The game was without real incident until the Reds took the lead via a well-worked free-kick.

It was 40 yards from goal on the left of midfield, Sam Tingle dinked in the set-piece and after Will Smith nodded the cross back towards goal, in stepped Victor Adeboyejo to fire beyond the visiting 'keeper.

It was 2-0 soon after when a lightning fast Reds break out of defence saw Adeboyejo powering through the middle, he had Matty Wolfe bursting towards goal to the left of him, and instead of going for goal himself, Victor laid it on a plate as Wolfe tapped into the empty net.

Leeds barely threatened themselves, with only a header from a corner that flashed just wide of any real significance.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 2-0 Leeds Utd

The game became a little fractious after the break but the away side were getting more joy when on the offensive.

A fine run on goal resulted in a Leeds forward getting off a shot towards goal but Jake Greatorex turned it around the post spectacularly.

However, Leeds did pull a goal back soon after when a deflected strike deceived Greatorex for 2-1.

But the Reds weren't to be denied and Adeboyejo added his second and Barnsley's third when after a flowing move from side to side, Ben Williams pulled a cross beautifully into Victor's path and the big man finished in style from close range.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 3-1 Leeds Utd
