U23s REPORT: Barnsley 1-2 Portsmouth

15 January 2018

Paul Harsley's youngsters slip to defeat in Premier League Cup.

Two very late Portsmouth goals saw Barnsley's U23s side defeated here at Oakwell.

In a game that Barnsley dominated from the outset, a red card for Matty Pearson on 24 minutes gave the visitors more opportunities.

Amir Berkovits twice went close for the Reds inside the first 10 minutes, first denied by the keeper before seeing another effort fizz just beyond the far post.

Louis Wardle then tried his luck but his vicious effort flew over the bar.

The dismissal of Pearson didn't affect the Reds too much and on 38 minutes they had the lead..

Romal Palmer was fouled on the edge of the box and he himself took the resulting free-kick, firing it low and hard through the wall and into the bottom corner for 1-0.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Portsmouth

Wardle and Matty Wolfe both had further chances as the Reds started the second half on top once more.

On 65 minutes a double chance..

Firstly, Wardle denied by a terrific save from Bass in the Pompey goal, then Jacob Brown fired against the crossbar.

On 77 minutes Victor Adeboyejo's bullet header was saved brilliantly low down by Bass, as the Reds continued to dominate.

But as we neared stoppage time the visitors struck an equaliser, their striker planting a firm header in off the crossbar for 1-1.

And totally against the game's flow, they snatched a winner when a shot from range flew into the top corner despite Nick Townsend getting a hand to the ball.

It was a cruel result, but it's three defeats from four games in Group F for the Reds.
