Matt Mills: “They are an unbelievable group of lads.”

3 February 2018

Deadline day arrival spoke to the media after making his Barnsley debut.

Mills began and finished the match away at Queens Park Rangers for his new side and impressed alongside summer signing Liam Lindsay. The defender, who has been awarded the recently vacated number five shirt, feels he has seen more than enough fighting spirit within the squad to turn their form around in the few days he has been at the Club.

Mills said: “I think from all the groups I have been part of, I have only been in the door two minutes but they are an unbelievable group of lads so I am hoping we can now stick those points on the board as soon as possible to kick ourselves away from danger.”

Having arrived on Wednesday after leaving fellow Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest, Mills becomes the oldest player at the Club. With over 400 league appearances under his belt he wants to try and be a leader to help the team around him in any way he can.

“I’m 31 now, it just creeps up on you! You think you’re a young lad then you’re the oldest in the squad. If I can offer any experience and advice then great, I’ll try and bring my best to the table in any way I can to help the team get results.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t as vocal out there as I would like to be today, as I got an elbow to the throat in training so I had to use the lads either side of me to pass on any messages I could, but next week I’m sure i’ll be back to my normal self!”
