PREVIEW: Blackpool Vs Barnsley

21 December 2018

The Reds head to the seaside this weekend for a Sky Bet League One clash with Blackpool, and here we've got you covered with our big match preview.

Following last Saturday's 1-1 draw with league leaders, Portsmouth, Barnsley are back in League One action on Saturday when they face the Tangerines at Bloomfield Road.

This is the Reds' second trip to the venue having already played out a 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat there earlier in the season.

Reds Head Coach, Daniel Stendel doesn't have any new injury concerns ahead of this one; indeed, if anything, he's got many options at his disposal and the one long-term absentee in Kenny Dougall will hope to further boost the Reds by making his long-awaited return in the next seven days.

The draw against Pompey was the least that Barnsley deserved on the day, having dominated the contest throughout, the Reds were indebted to on-form striker Cauley Woodrow for his second half equaliser. Unfortunately, despite a plethora of chances, Stendel's side couldn't find the winner, but that point did signal an end to a brief run of defeats.

Saturday's hosts go into the fixture off the back of FA Cup progression in midweek. Blackpool edging out Solihull Moors 3-2 in a second round replay, after extra time. That victory now sees them paired with Arsenal in round three.

In terms of league form, they've been massively inconsistent recently. A 3-0 victory over Burton Albion was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers. They returned to winning ways with a fine victory over Charlton Athletic before last weekend going down 2-0 at Oxford United.

The home side sit just a place and two points behind the Reds therefore could leapfrog Barnsley with three points this weekend.

Blackpool have one of the strongest squads in the division in terms of 'name' players, with the likes of Jay Spearing, Nathan Delfouneso and Donervon Daniels having played in the top flight. In Ryan McLaughlin and John O'Sullivan, Barnsley will face a pair of former loanees.

The manager at Bloomfield Road is Terry McPhillips. The former assistant to previous manager, Gary Bowyer, both at Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers, McPhillips took over the reins when Bowyer resigned at the start of the season. He's so far presided over 30 matches as manager and has won 50% of them in all competitions.

McPhillips will potentially be without young striker Joe Dodoo who suffered an ankle injury in the FA Cup win over Solihull in midweek, but other than that, the home side should have a strong squad to choose from on Saturday when the Reds come to town.

Both Andreas Winkler and Brad Potts spoke about the fixture during the week when meeting with the media, and their pre-match thoughts can be found on iFollow Barnsley.

It's a Bloomfield Road return for midfield man Potts who was a key player for the Tangerines prior to his Oakwell arrival.

You only have to go back three years for the last league trip to Bloomfield Road, as Lee Johnson's Reds played out a 1-1 draw.

Barnsley took the lead through Conor Hourihane who used his weaker right foot to slam home from the edge of the box after tricky wing play from Marley Watkins.

The hosts restored parity and claimed a point they scarcely warranted when Jack Redshaw levelled despite the best efforts of the scrambling Nick Townsend in the Reds' net.

There was an FA Cup clash more recently where both sides played out a 0-0 draw in the third round, back in January of 2017, with Brad Potts (pictured) in full flow.

Barnsley last won at the seaside in February of 2013 when after Tom Ince's solo strike had cancelled out an early Jim O'Brien strike, the visiting Reds, trying desperately to fight against relegation won out thanks to Jason Scotland's 88th minute goal, turning home a cross at the far post.

The first meeting between the sides was in February of 1899 when the Reds beat the Tangerines 2-1.

Saturday will be the 102nd meeting in a clash that the Reds dominate historically. Barnsley hold 44 victories to Blackpool's 32.

The referee this weekend is Anthony Backhouse. The Cumbrian official will be taking charge of just his second ever Reds fixture, having overseen the 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers at Oakwell earlier this season.

Anthony Backhouse

One of the younger appointments, Backhouse is just 28-years-old and was promoted to the Level 1 National List of officials at the start of last season.

He's been in the middle of 22 games so far this season, the majority in Sky Bet League One and has dished out 59 cautions with two dismissals (both coming in the same game).

This will be his third match involving Blackpool this term. He oversaw victories over Doncaster (EFL Cup) and Wimbledon (League One).

We've sold around 1,500 tickets for Saturday's clash, but if you're not one of those making the trip, we'll have live and uninterrupted commentary on iFollow Barnsley.
