U23s | PREVIEW: Cardiff Vs Barnsley

19 August 2018

Barnsley U23s travel to Cardiff City on Monday afternoon looking to build on their 2-2 draw at home to Queens Park Rangers last week.

The young Reds led 2-0 at Oakwell, but were begged back by the visitors after the interval and needed a Jake Greatorex penalty save to claim a hard-fought point.

Jared Bird and Tai-Reece Chisholm were on target for Martin Devaney’s side, who currently sit eighth in the Professional Development League North.

Nottingham Forest were the only team in the North section to have lost in the opening round of fixtures, while Crewe Alexandra also drew with Charlton Athletic – the Reds’ next home fixture.

Meanwhile, Cardiff were thrashed 4-1 by Burnley in their season opener, with Brayden Shaw scoring the Bluebirds’ only goal. However, the Clarets did field four household names at Turf Moor with Tom Heaton, Ben Gibson, Kevin Long and Matej Vydra all completing 90 minutes for Michael Duff’s side.

The last time the two teams met, Cardiff scored a dramatic late equaliser eight minutes into injury time at Oakwell back in April. Victor Adeboyejo had given the Reds the lead from the penalty spot, only for Jason Akiotu to snatch a share of the spoils.

Prior to that, Barnsley had won the only previous meeting 1-0 with Josh Kay scoring the game’s solitary goal – a rebound after his initial penalty had been saved by Luke O’Reilly.

Monday’s fixture will now take place at Leckwith Stadium (Cardiff Athletics Stadium) and kick-off at 2pm.
