Potts: “We’ve got a great away following from the fans.”

9 August 2018

Midfielder urges his side to continue the good start to the season in the Yorkshire derby.

Brad Potts opened his account for the season with a thumping second-half strike against Oxford United on the opening day.

The midfielder burst forward from an opposition corner and finished off the flowing move during the 4-0 victory, and now wants to see his side take their positivity into the Yorkshire derby this weekend in front of a sell-out away end.

“We’ve got a great away following from the fans, we’ve sold out on Saturday and they become the extra man for the players, so come 5 o’clock on Saturday we want to send them home happy.

“They’ve signed quite a lot of new players so they’re a new team. We’ll be going there, it’s a big ground and obviously it’s a derby game so they will have a few fans there. It will be a tough away game but we need to play our own game and come away with the points.”

The 24-year-old doesn’t want to specifically set himself personal targets for the season but did mention that he was in double figures for both goals and assists during his promotion winning season with Blackpool during 2016/17.

“When I was at Blackpool I was in double figures for both goals and assists for the season so if any target, it would be to try and achieve that. Every week I am trying to improve and better myself and the more goals I am scoring the better it is for me personally and the squad as a whole.”

It’s deadline day across the country, but Potts knows where his own focus and his teammates minds are at as we approach the 5pm deadline.

“It’s obviously quite an exciting day watching all the last minute deals, but as far as our lads are concerned we all know we’re going to be here. So, on our behalf, there’s not a lot to think about. Two lads have gone this summer so it’s looking likely the squad will be together for a while.

“If we want to do well in this league we want to keep everyone together. We’ve now had six months together of the whole group, so we’ve benefitted from that and gelled even though we went down. We know we’ve got a chance of being right up there. I think the board have made it pretty clear that we want to keep everyone together, because the potential is here in the squad to get promoted.”
