U23s | REPORT: Barnsley 0-3 Burnley

20 April 2018

Three goals in six second half minutes ensured that Burnley left Oakwell with all three points in the Professional Development League.

Substitute Jordan Cropper opened the scoring on 70 minutes before a quick fire double from Tianaihe Chakwani sealed victory for the visiting Clarets.

It was Barnsley who started better and almost went ahead when top scorer Victor Adeboyejo burst clear of the last defender, but Conor Mitchell was equal to the shot as he palmed it behind for a corner at his near post.

Moments later, Louis Walsh surged down the right flank and fired a dangerous low cross into the area, but both Amir Berkovits and Adeboyejo failed to take advantage as Burnley cleared their lines.

Adeboyejo then tried his luck from the edge of the box as he capitalised on some slack defending, but his shot curled just wide of the far post.

Paul Harsley’s side continued to create openings and should have been rewarded for a wonderful team move that was originally worked right across the back four. The ball fell to Berkovits on the left, but his inviting cross evaded everyone in red.

Burnley soon began to settle into the game and were almost in front on the stroke of half-time as Chakwani’s shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Sam Fielding.

Michael Duff’s side came out firing on all cylinders after the interval and came close to opening the scoring when Ntomber Massanea’s fierce drive was bravely blocked by Will Smith inside the area.

Louis Wardle then marauded forward from right back and delivered a wonderful cross to the far post, but Berkovits just couldn’t rise high enough to keep his header down as the ball sailed over the crossbar.

Then, a stroke of luck for the visitors as Cropper, introduced from the bench just seconds earlier, picked up the ball on the right wing and his cross sailed over the head of Trialist and into the far top corner.

Within minutes, Burnley doubled their lead as the ever-dangerous Chakwani latched onto a through ball and chipped the ball over the onrushing Trialist to double the Clarets’ lead.

Two soon became three as Ali Koike played an inch perfect pass into the path of Chakwani who drilled a thunderous strike into the bottom corner to effectively end the tie as a contest on 76 minutes.

The Reds pushed forward looking for a consolation, but Walsh was unable to trouble Mitchell with his low shot after cutting in from the left as the visitors maintained their clean sheet.
