U23s | PREVIEW: Reds v Cardiff

15 April 2018

Barnsley U23s face Cardiff City in the Professional Development League on the main Oakwell Pitch on Monday afternoon, 2pm.

The young Reds haven’t been in action for more than a week when they were undone by two late goals at Crewe Alexandra in a 3-2 defeat.

Performances of late from Paul Harsley’s side have left reason to be optimistic, with his young squad - which has an average age of just 18 - not shying away from the physical demands of competing against older, experienced players.

Cardiff are currently seventh in the Professional Development League South and have found April a difficult month to navigate, with three defeats in a row since beating Watford 4-0 on 31 March.

Barnsley will need to be wary of the threat posed by Mark Harris, who has 12 goals to his name so far this season.

The 19-year-old midfielder also featured for the Bluebirds’ first team during the 2016/17 campaign and was on the bench for this season’s FA Cup third round clash with Mansfield Town.

Victory for Monday’s visitors could see them climb as high as fifth, but any hopes of a late charge for the play-offs seem all but extinguished after a run of seven defeats in ten games.

You can see how the young Reds get on against Cardiff by attending the game at Oakwell. Entrance is FREE for all supporters at the West Stand ONLY.
