U23s REPORT: Barnsley 1-3 Leicester City

10 October 2017

Paul Harsley's young side were defeated by Leicester City this afternoon despite a battling performance.

It was a very young and inexperienced lineup against an in-form and more illustrious opponent but Harsley's side gave a good account of themselves as this seasons Premier League Cup competition got underway.

There were early chances for both sides with first Ben Williams seeing a header saved by the Foxes 'keeper at his near post before up the other end, Reds stopper Nick Townsend pulled off a fantastic, smothering save to deny the visitors the lead.

But with 23 minutes played, Leicester deservedly went ahead when Admiral Muskwe struck neatly from inside the box.

The Reds reponded well however, and just before the half-hour mark, Matty Wolfe's bullet header 10 yards out levelled up the scores at 1-1.

It didn't last long though, with the Foxes retaking the lead when Josh Gordon scored a superb goal from all of 30-yards-out.

Early in the second half, Barnsley nearly equalised.

A terrific, driving run from Josh Kay saw him move quickly by opponents before his powerful, 25-yard, left-footed effort was turned away spectacularly by the away goalie.

Reds substitute, Wilberforce Ocran snatched at an opportunity when well-placed inside the penalty area as the hosts pressed for the equaliser, and then Leicester put the game to bed..

It was Muskwe again, as he reacted quickest inside the box to force home a set-piece, against the run of play.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 1-3 Leicester City
