REPORT: Barnsley 0-2 Leeds United

25 November 2017

Disappointing afternoon here at Oakwell as Leeds ease to a 2-0 win.

Paul Heckingbottom made five changes, reverting to the side that took a point away at Norwich City last weekend with notably a return to the side for captain, Angus MacDonald.

It was an afternoon to forget however, with first half goals from Samuel Saiz and Gianni Alioski enough for a comfortable away Leeds victory.

It was a fractious start, both sides saw players booked early on; Jannson and Ayling for the visitors, Barnes for the Reds.

On 23 minutes Leeds took a deserved lead when Saiz picked up the ball on halfway before running in on goal, unchallenged and his shot from the edge of the box may well have took a slight deflection before beating Adam Davies low to his right for 1-0.

Joe Williams lashed a volley well wide in response but other than a few crosses from free-kicks and corners, one that saw Liam Lindsay glance a header wide, it was a tough half of football for Reds supporters, and it ended in hurtful fashion when Leeds doubled their lead.

In the third minute of first half stoppage time, Alioski jinked into acres of space outside the box before curling a delightful left-footed effort into the right-hand corner of Davies' goal.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 0-2 Leeds

Hecky sent on Ike Ugbo and Gary Gardner at the break, replacing Harvey Barnes and George Moncur.

Within two minutes, Gardner was booked for a foul just outside the box. The resulting free kick from Hernandez looped up and out of play after a deflection off the Reds wall.

Hernandez was booked for pulling back Andy Yiadom on 53 minutes.

Five minutes later and Williams again tried his luck from range and on the volley, but found the Ponty End.

Leeds should have made it 3-0 just after the hour when Ekuban received Hernandez' exquisite through ball inside the box but fired his shot into the side-netting.

Adam Hammill was booked on 75 minutes before then making way for Ryan Hedges.

On 77 minutes, Brad Potts played in Gardner on the edge of the box but the on-loan midfielder, in space and with plenty of time hit a timid shot straight at Wiedwald in the Leeds goal.

As we entered four minutes of injury time, Hedges was twice thwarted inside the box, first by Wiedwald and then by Cooper, as the Reds succumbed to defeat, their second at Oakwell this week.
