Hecky and Warnock on last night's game

22 November 2017

We get the thoughts of both men in the dugout following last night's defeat at Oakwell as the Reds were pipped 1-0 by high-flying Cardiff City.

PAUL HECKINGBOTTOM

"What do you want me to say about that?" asked the Reds Head Coach following the match.

He believes the performance was good enough but that the opposition did a job on them in what was a miserable night for Barnsley.

He explained: "It was a bang average game, but whilst I knew it would be difficult I was pleased with the performance of the team. I knew what we'd be coming up against and there was absolutely nothing in the game.

"Two different styles of play but the ball wasn't in play long enough, I'm guessing that'll be the least the ball's been in play in 90 minutes this season.

"So that never makes for a good spectacle and whilst we stood up to all that, it was disappointing to lose to the goal that we did."

The Gaffer was asked if the awful conditions played their part in proceedings but he wasn't having any of that despite claims to the contrary from Neil Warnock.

He said: "No, I'm not having that. It was exactly the same as when we played them here last season. They're a very good side and they've gone 2nd in the table tonight but you'd be hard pushed watching that tonight to see the team who's 2nd and the team in 17th."

NEIL WARNOCK

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has described Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley as their ‘best result of the season’ in the circumstances.

The midweek clash looked to be heading to a hard-fought stalemate until the intervention of Callum Paterson in the 83rd minute to take the three points back to South Wales.

"We’ve had some very good results, but I think tonight, playing how we did, to come out with a win is as good as it gets,” claimed a beaming Warnock.

"That’s what you have to do away from home, to grind these results out."

The experienced Yorkshire-born coach also commended Paul Heckingbottom and his Reds side on their performance and for the team’s season so far, describing the job Hecky is doing as ‘fabulous’.

“I do think they found it difficult to break us down, and Neil [Etheridge] in goal didn’t really have a lot to do, but honestly I think Paul [Heckingbottom] has done a fabulous job.

“They had their big lads at the back to deal with Danny [Ward] which is why I had Callum Paterson up there as well.

“With Barnsley, they always lose their best players, replace them with young lads and they’re one of the best form teams in the league at the moment. With the wage bill etc, he’s done a remarkable job here and they don’t have many nights like this one.”
