Scowen: "Last year was incredible, this year has been amazing."

16 March 2017

Reds midfielder Josh Scowen spoke to the local media ahead of the Norwich clash.

The Barnsley squad had a team bonding session this week when they travelled to Cheltenham for this year’s horse racing festival. Scowen spoke of how it was good to be with his teammates in a different environment, as well as who enjoyed the day the most!

“It was good for some of the boys, not so good for the others!” He joked. “I’m one of the not so good, but it was a good day out. I think Ryan Williams was the biggest winner, I didn’t do too bad but could have been better. A few of the boys threw a few tips in, I don’t know if they turned out any good. Ryan Williams got a tip, put it on the wrong horse and he won! It was a good bonding experience for all the lads.

“I think that these days out are very important, you get to see a different side to people that you don’t normally see and that can only help with what we do on the pitch. It’s a different experience, you have some good banter with the lads and it’ll only bring us closer as a group.”

The Reds have battled hard in matches recently but have not taken the full points offering. The most recent game saw Ipswich score a 93rd minute equaliser at Oakwell in a match that Scowen and his Reds teammates had dominated from start to finish.

“In the performances we have done quite well, just maybe the little bits we were good at, at the start of the season have faded away a bit, so we need to get back to that which is being ruthless in both boxes and once we do that we’ll pick up points again.

“I think QPR is a good example, in the first half we had some really good chances and didn’t take them. It showed because QPR managed two shots all game and came away with two goals, so we need to get back to where we were at the start of the season.”

The energetic and battling midfielder has been deployed in more than one position of late and his versatility is well known. Scowen knows where he wants to play in a match but is happy to help wherever he is needed on the pitch.

“Everyone knows me I’ll play anywhere.” He stated. “I played wide right earlier on in the season and did quite well, but at QPR I don’t feel it worked out quite as well but overall I am happy with the way I have been performing. My position is centre mid, that’s where I want to be playing and feel I can play my best football but if the Gaffer picks me to play somewhere else I won’t moan I’ll just do it the best I can.”

The Reds number six was then asked about his contract situation at Oakwell and he gave an honest answer in stating how happy he was to be here, playing for Barnsley.

“Talks are on-going, I am a Barnsley player right now and I will continue to give 100% every game and then we’ll see what happens in the summer. Of course I have enjoyed my time here, last year was incredible and this year has been amazing. I am happy here and if the deal can be struck that’s great."

Having beaten this weekend's opponents Norwich City earlier on in the campaign, Scowen is looking to do the double over a side that he feels

"They are one of the biggest Club's in the league. We'll go there looking to give our best performance like we did at home against them, all the boys will be up for this and we'll go to try and get the three points. They've got Premier League players so to test ourselves against them is always nice and if we perform the way we have been, but be ruthless as well, we'll come away with a good result."
