Scowen: "We are a strong unit."

21 January 2017

Reaction from Josh Scowen after the 3-2 victory over Leeds at Oakwell.

Reds midfielder Josh Scowen spoke to the press after playing a pivotal role in securing an excellent three points at Oakwell in the Yorkshire derby against Leeds.

Scowen was named the Sky Sports ‘man of the match’ for his performance, and spoke about the game to Barnsley Player HD after the full-time whistle.

Scowen said, “It was a great game, to come back from one goal down in the first half, we battled well. Two quick goals after half-time made it one of those games to remember I think. I thought before their goal we dominated the game, but obviously they got it. We carried on going and Bradders came up with a great header.

“When all the team are playing with energy and getting forward, that's when we are at our best as you've seen tonight. We created a few chances here and there just from pressing them! That's the way we want to play and we will keep doing that as it has worked so far.”

Reds captain Conor Hourihane secured the win for Barnsley with a trademark stunner, curling home a free-kick following Scowen’s short lay-off to him.

“He’s bang average!” Scowen joked. “No he's a great player - You've seen his left foot over and over again at Oakwell and everywhere else, he's a great player and a pleasure to play alongside.”

Playing back in the middle of the pitch today, the Reds number six covered every blade of grass possible.

“My best position is centre mid so that's where I want to be playing, but if I have to do a job on the wing or wherever else I will, but I am happy in centre mid.”

After a week of intense transfer speculation regarding his fellow Reds teammates, Scowen spoke of how that is all part of being a footballer.

“Being a footballer you know that there are always rumours on Twitter and Facebook but until someone tells you that you are leaving, you can't take any notice of it. We have a little bit of banter here and there but it's our job to play football and we will keep playing for Barnsley until we are told otherwise, we'll keep giving 100% as we did today.

“We are a good side and we have only lost one player. If anyone does end up going, someone else will come in and fill the void. We are a strong unit and whoever comes in will be fine.”

Finally, Josh gave his thoughts on the emotions he experienced from today’s superb win.

“It's right up there being a derby game and where they are in the league. I think we dominated the game and we deserved to come away with the three points.”
