U18s | REPORT: Barnsley 4-1 Leeds United

11 February 2017

Stunning second-half performance from the Reds sees them thrash their Yorkshire rivals.

Barnsley Under 18s produced an excellent second-half performance to romp to a 4-1 victory over Leeds United Under 18s in this morning's Yorkshire derby.

Despite the Whites hitting the post early on through Lewis Knight, the Reds took the lead midway through the half when Kane Swinburn rifled a loose ball into the top corner.

Arron Murphy then pulled off a fine save to keep Knight at bay, before Sammuel Ammisah levelled on the stroke of half time.

Just before the hour, the Reds regained the lead when Sham Bertie headed home Robbie Miller's pinpoint header, and Bertie came close to adding a second with a blistering drive.

Mo Saeed and substitute Louis Rowe added two further goals to the Reds' tally late on as Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney's side extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

On a testing pitch, both sides struggled initially to fashion chances but it was the Whites who came closest early on when Knight struck the upright after cutting inside from the flank.

Romal Palmer's acrobatic effort from Mo Saeed's cross was initially spilled by Theo Richardson but the Leeds 'keeper recovered just in time to thwart Wilberforce Ocran.

Leeds came close again when Ammisah forced a good save out of Murphy, but it was the Reds who drew first blood 24 minutes in.

A cross from the left fell to Ocran, who scuffed his effort towards goal and as Leeds failed to clear, Swinburn blasted into the top corner past the flailing arms of Richardson.

Knight was once again denied by Murphy as he tried his luck from the left before the Reds were undone on the stroke of half time when Ammisah poked home.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Leeds United.

Leeds replacement Jack Clarke flashed a ball across the face of goal that the visitors could not connect with and the Reds made them pay for failing to take that chance.

Following a corner, Mo Saeed hoisted the ball towards the far post, Robbie Miller nodded the ball perfectly into the path of Sham Bertie, who had the simple task of heading into the empty net.

Bertie could have doubled his tally when he lashed toward goal from the corner of the box but failed to hit the target, before shouts for a penalty fell on deaf ears after Saeed's attempt appeared to strike an arm.

That chance proved merely academic 15 minutes later when Saeed curled home a spectacular 25-yard effort, leaving Richardson with no chance.

And almost immediately after, Louis Rowe snatched at a chance but the ball rebounded off Richardson into his path, allowing him to slot home the Reds' fourth.
