Mowatt: "I am going to show the fans what I can do."

23 February 2017

Alex Mowatt spoke to the local media at Oakwell this morning ahead of the Yorkshire derby with Huddersfield at the weekend.

The South Yorkshire born midfielder joined the Reds in January with no hesitation as soon as he heard about the potential move.

“It all happened really quickly, I didn’t know much of it and then my agent spoke to me and said Barnsley were interested, then within a couple of days I had signed and I was delighted.

“It felt like it was over night it all happened, I had a few missed calls in the morning then went for my medical, then I was signed by the night!

“I never really thought I’d be leaving Leeds in January, maybe at the end of the season or that I would go out on loan because I wasn’t playing that much. It’s happened and I am delighted to be here.”

Mowatt joined the Reds at an exciting time he believes, and fits straight into a squad that has many of the same qualities as himself.

“I watched the game here against Leeds and I thought Barnsley were a very good team, who played very good football and it’s a young exciting team that I wanted to be a part of.

“It’s a young dressing room and all the lads get on well. I’ve obviously played in two games now and I have enjoyed it when I’ve been out there. It doesn’t surprise me that we are doing well, I saw the lads play twice before I signed and it’s a good counter attacking side that have done really well.”

Alex made his debut against Wolves at Oakwell at the end of January. The midfielder started the match and came close to equalising for the Reds midway through the first half, before receiving a red card, ending his debut early.

“It started well, I was enjoying the game and I nearly scored, but then the rest, I just want to forget. I was disappointed with myself and the three game ban seemed like a life time but I am back now and hopefully I can get out there and get playing. My adrenaline was obviously high during the game and I can’t really remember what happened.”

Having returned to action against Brighton at Oakwell on Saturday as a second half substitute, the stylish left-footed playmaker wants to get back into the team but is well aware of the fierce competition for places.

“It’s always good to have healthy competition, we’re all training well and we will have to see who the Gaffer picks! It’s a young dressing room and being a similar age, it means everyone gets on well.

“It was a good to know someone when I first came in to the squad. I spoke to Aidy before I signed which was good.”

The next match Mowatt could be involved in is this weekend in a Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town. The former Leeds United player has previously put the Terriers to the sword in this fixture with two excellent goals.

“I’ve got a few mates who are Huddersfield fans. Derby games are always exciting and good games with a big atmosphere so I am really looking forward to Saturday. Now I am back I am going to get out onto the pitch and show the fans what I can do.

“I scored a good goal two seasons ago against them and I think my first ever goal was against them as well, so hopefully I can score one on Saturday as well!”
