Moncur: "I am hoping I showed my ability tonight."

14 February 2017

George Moncur spoke to the press following the Reds' 3-1 win away at Aston Villa.

After a superb performance in the heart of the Reds midfield, helping to ensure all three points, Moncur spoke of how the win was one of the best nights of his career.

He said, “It’s up there with one of the best nights I think for me, coming into the side I thought all the boys dug in really deep and showed their class when it needed to be shown and because of that we really deserved the three points.”

Well known as one of the biggest teams in the league, the Reds have claimed another fantastic win on the road with the victory and Moncur was quick to praise his teammates for their pressing game after beating an opposition that has cost so much to assemble.

“You’ve got the likes of Conor (Hourihane), I mean we know what he’s like, a class player. You’ve got Lansbury who is quality as well. Hogan upfront, Kodjia… They’ve got some great players. All the lads really stuck to their task well and I think we deserved the points.

“The manager likes us to do that (pressing the opposition) and when we get it right we nick the ball and counter well, so we showed great examples of that tonight and it has paid off.”

Earlier in the season the midfielder spent some time away on loan at Peterborough. He is pleased to be back at Oakwell now and gave his feelings on his time away.

“I chose to come back because I thought I could offer something to the team. I am hoping I showed my ability tonight. I think when I first came here, moving from the South where I lived was a bit of a shock to me and I wasn’t really right in my own head playing in the team. I thought to gain some confidence and play games I would be best to go out on loan and then I started well there, then it went a bit down again. I’ll openly admit that it wasn’t really the best time, but I knew I had to pull my finger out a bit and do something for this team. Thankfully I have got a chance tonight and I hope I have done well.

“I think my Dad gets on me a bit as well! Football is a hard game and when it isn’t going for you, you have to do everything you can to try and push on and do well. Because he has played at the highest level he pushes me to do well. When you have competition it pushes you and it brings out the best in players.”

Moncur has now had to adapt his role in the Reds line-up, sitting a bit deeper than he usually would but he is cherishing the opportunity and help he has been given.

“I think when you’re known as an attacking player, like when I was at Colchester I was known as a ‘luxury player’, and I thought I have had enough of this. I have had to try and do more and more off the ball, not worry about what I can do with the ball, just focus off the ball this time. That side is more important for me now than on the ball because stopping goals, then countering on teams with the players we’ve got upfront and in wide areas, when we’re playing like we did tonight I don’t think there is anyone better at doing that than us in the league.”
