"We'll keep working hard and come through this..."

10 December 2017

Following Saturday’s home defeat against visitors Derby County, Reds midfielder, Gary Gardner spoke exclusively to iFollow Barnsley.

In what proved to be a disappointing afternoon at Oakwell in the Reds final home game before Christmas, goals from Tom Lawrence, Matej Vydra and Andres Weimann rocked the Reds who'd been on top in the opening period but couldn't grab a goal for their work.

‘We’re all very disappointed. I thought, after the first 30 minutes our game plan was working and everyone stuck to it. But when you go one down, then two, it’s hard to come back from, but we’ll keep working hard and hopefully our luck will change.’

Despite their work-rate, the Reds rued a number of missed chances at pivitol points, but Gardner insists that their luck will change sooner rather than later.

‘We’re certainly working on that, we work on a lot of things and the lads continue to work really hard. They didn’t have many chances, but when the chance came, they took it and were very clinical. We need to start taking our chances and I’m sure our luck will change. We’ve got a lot of energy in our team and things will change, we just need everyone to stick with us.’

However, two consecutive trips to West London provide Paul Heckingbottom’s side with the perfect opportunity notch their first Sky Bet Championship win since early November.

“We’ve all got to stick together and stay positive. I know the bad run will change, I’ve been round them a lot and there’s hungry, young lads in the dressing room. There’s  no-one in the changing room that’s scared of the challenge and I think we’ll overcome it. I thought we showed a lot of energy. If we take one of our chances before they scored, it’s a completely different game, but as I say, we keep working and our luck will change.”
