The debutant spoke to iFollow yesterday after making his first Reds appearance since signing on a season-long loan from Leicester City.
Appearing as an 80th minute replacement for Adam Hammill, the England youth starlet made quite the impression and came closest to rescuing a point for the Reds with a late effort that was heading for the corner but for the outstanding save by Ipswich 'keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
But Barnes feels positive about the future and of the Reds' chances going forward.
"It wasn't to be today for us," he told iFollow. "We weren't good enough I suppose, we had chances to put the game to bed but didn't. We've gone over the chances that we've had and they've had and it's even more disappointing comparing that.
"But for myself personally it was nice to have made my debut and I think that once I get used to my surroundings, gel with my teammates I hope to prove I can make the step up after my time in League One last season. I thought I'd scored to be honest, but it's somehow stayed out!
"I'm here to play but it's about performing. I can't just expect it. I have to earn the shirt. But I feel this is the right place for me, I enjoyed meeting the Gaffer and listening to what he had to say. I can only improve here I feel."
