MacDonald: "That one is for the fans!"

1 April 2017

Defender dedicates his first Football League goal to the supporters after grabbing a point against Sheffield Wednesday.

Reds defender Angus MacDonald's first Championship goal is one he wanted to celebrate with the fans following the Reds' 1-1 South Yorkshire derby draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 24-year-old, who committed his future to the Club last week by signing a new contract extension, celebrated the new deal in fitting fashion, heading home a stoppage time equaliser.

He said, "It's up there with one of the best moments I've had on a football pitch. It was a great ball in, I was in the right place at the right time and I guided it in, I didn't know where I was to be honest!

"The fans were excellent so it was good. All the lads were bang at it today. We'd have been disappointed to lose that but I'm glad we got a point."

MacDonald jumped highest from Adam Hammill's injury time free-kick which found the towering defender with acute accuracy, and in turn MacDonald cushioned his header into the far corner which sent Oakwell wild.

"I've put a few in the wrong net this season, but it's nice to finally put one in the right end. The goal is definitely a boost but the way the lads played today is a boost in general. We still have to treat each game as it comes and see if we can finish as high as possible."

The Reds scored their goal in stoppage time but then had chances to win the match just seconds later. Moncur, Kent, Hammill and finally Matty James all saw efforts blocked or tipped just wide on an afternoon that didn't have many clear cut chances in!

"If anyone scores against you, it shows great character to come back and we could have nicked it at the end definitely. There were more chances in the last few minutes than there were in the entire game! You're always going to be a little bit ropey scoring in the 93rd minute and then the pressure we applied to them was good, so we were unlucky not to go on and win it. We could smell blood and we tried to take that. I couldn't breathe after that celebration."

That's Angus' first Football League goal and he tried to describe the moment after the match, and dedicated his goal to the fans.

"That's one for the fans that one and I'm glad they enjoyed it. It's one of the best moments of my career so far, I'd put it up there. I don't think today was about any one individual at all, it was about us playing as well as we could and trying to get the three points.

"I scored in the cup but it's nice to get a Championship goal. A 93rd minute winner can do all-sorts for the team. Hopefully we can take that into the next game on Tuesday, it's another big game at home against Cardiff City."
