Davies: "I've really enjoyed this season."

27 April 2017

Reds 'keeper Adam Davies spoke to the press at Oakwell today to preview the Burton Albion fixture this Saturday.

The Barnsley number one first reflected on a disappointing defeat last time out in Bristol.

After losing Marc Roberts to injury at half-time the makeshift Reds defence came under intense pressure and eventually buckled.

Davies described the frustration with that whilst declaring other players now need to raise their game if given an opportunity.

He said: "It was very frustrating for us. I do feel that had we not lost Robbo we'd have comfortably won that game. But that's when we needed to step up and we didn't do that in the second half and it cost us the match.

"But we live and we learn and hopefully we can start putting things right, starting this Saturday against Burton.

"We've obviously not got a massive squad here and we have to try and keep all of our players fit. But we've been unlucky in that department recently with Yids, Adam and now Marc. These things can't be avoided.

"But it's about other people stepping up and showing what they're about."

This 2016/17 campaign has been Adam's first taste of Championship football.

He told us how much he's enjoyed the season and why there should be a sense of satisfaction amongst the squad.

"I think we've done okay this season" he said. "The amount of players we've had coming in and in spite of some good players leaving I think we've done alright. If we'd have been offered mid-table at the start of the season everyone would have taken that.

"I've really enjoyed it myself as well, on a personal level. It's been a nice challenge, there's been ups and downs, probably more ups! So it's been good and I've enjoyed it."

The Reds will be finishing comfortably in mid-table as Davo points out, and he feels the great start they made to the Championship season stood them in good stead for the rest of the campaign.

As he explained: "I think the momentum we carried over from last season helped us start this season well and allowed us to get a foothold in the division.

"We got some victories nice and early which always helps.

"And I think we need to finish this year well to try and take that same kind of form into next season."

Davies recently signed a new contract at Oakwell and gave us an insight into why he did so.

"Playing every week is massive for me" he said. "There's good people at the Club; the management have been great with me from day one.

"I really like being here at this Club, the fans have always been behind me which means a lot.

"I'm still young, I'm only 24 and already played a lot of games for a 'keeper. It's good experience and I'm learning all the time.

"I think I'm closing in on 100 consecutive games for the Reds now and taking Dave Watson's record which is something I'd love to have!"

Saturday sees the Reds close out the season in terms of home fixtures when Burton Albion arrive with safety in the Championship still unsecured.

The 'keeper said the Reds fans deserve to be rewarded with three points.

"They've been fantastic all season and I think we need to give them something to cheer on Saturday.

"They've come out in numbers home and away every week and we want to give them a win to reward their support throughout the season."
