Reds in the Community is an established provider of the National Citizen Service programme. The National Citizen Service Programme is the government’s flagship voluntary personal and social development programme for 16 and 17 year olds. The initiative is delivered in partnership with the Football League Trust and NCS Trust, an independent organisation set up in 2012 to administer the programme on behalf of the Cabinet Office.

The scheme takes place in the Spring, Summer and Autumn coinciding in and around the school holidays. The programme includes residential weeks involving outward bound, team-building and volunteering activities. The programme culminates with participants planning and delivering a social action project relevant to their local community. The programme duration is four weeks in the Summer and one week (condensed model) during Spring and Autumn delivery. The young people’s achievements are marked with a graduation event hosted at Oakwell. This provides an opportunity to showcase participants’ work and achievements.

Young people face many challenges as they emerge from their school education and progress into further education or the workplace. The NCS programme provides a solid platform to support this key transitional period. It provides the perfect opportunity for young people to develop new skills essential in an educational or work environment.
