Fletcher Delighted With First League Goal

22 February 2016

Derby day hero Ashley Fletcher spoke to the press after he scored the winning goal against Doncaster Rovers to seal all three points for the Reds.

The Reds forward gave his thoughts after his second Barnsley goal, but the first league goal of his career.

“I’ve had to wait a couple of games for it since Fleetwood, but I had the confidence it would come.” Fletcher explained. “I think it was a matter of putting the chances away, we worked really hard to combat against them and sniff them out. We broke on the counter and got the goal.

“They’re the kind of goals I like! They’re easy but they are hard, as well as you really have to concentrate.”

After a run of games without a goal, Fletcher added, “This is the run strikers go through. It’s been a bit of a baron patch but I’m happy to get the goal today.

“It’s a real team effort and it showed today. The combinations we have now with myself coming in and the players that start, we have set a platform. We’re moving up the league and I hope we can keep going.

“The quality of the team is very very high, I don’t expect to start but hopefully I can keep scoring off the bench then I hope to be able to wriggle my way in.

“I think it’s important to keep winning. Last week was disappointing. I felt we did enough to get something out of the game but to get back to winnings ways is pleasing.

“To score my first league goal - I’m really happy. It’s up there with the Fleetwood goal. I think the Gaffer felt I could come on and make a difference. I don’t have my family here today, it’s the first game they’ve missed! But I’ve had lots of nice texts and tweets.”
