Reds 95th minute match-winner Ryan Williams gave his thoughts to the media after an emphatic win here at the Cardiff City Stadium today. After the Reds were pulled back to 3-3 by the resilient Welsh side late on, the Reds winger popped up in the very last minute of the game to secure an incredible victory and send the travelling fans into raptures. Following a long road back from injury, the goal was his first for the Club and clearly a special moment for the Australian. Williams was also keen to praise the efforts of his teammates who had worked tirelessly throughout the game.
“It’s probably a whole year piled into one minute there! It was good for me, obviously a lot of relief and a lot of relief for the boys who worked so hard for that one. For me to come on and finish it off for us was amazing. They (the players) are the ones that worked hard and I came on and tapped the ball in, so the credit goes to me but everyone has done so well. We’re just happy to get the three points.”
After a superb first half which saw the Reds score three delightfully worked goals, the Bluebirds came out fighting in the second half and the Reds were made to work hard for the three points, particularly when defending set pieces.
“To be fair, first half we looked comfortable and then second half they came out of the blocks. They’re all six foot plus, and obviously we’re not the biggest team so it was hard to defend their set pieces at times, but we managed it in the end. For us we can come up against any team and battle hard.”
The win represents the Club’s 9th league victory of the season, and Williams feels that the never-say-die attitude is a big factor in the team’s success.
“All of the boys don’t stop until the 90th minute, or 95th minute and everyone just keeps going and going! It’s like that in training, so obviously it’s going to reflect how we play on the pitch. All we look to do is chase the team in front of us, that’s what we can do and we’re doing well at the moment, so we’ll stick to it.”
Through injury, Williams has endured a tough start to his Barnsley career since his permeant move from Fulham, but he was delighted to put that all behind him today by grabbing a late winner.
“There’s been a lot of times where I’ve been sat back in the stands watching the game, and now it’s nice to be on and to be the one to score the winner is obviously fantastic.”
After three wins from four games so far in December, the Reds now face a nine-day wait until the next game, against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day. Williams explained that the lads will continue to work hard on the training field in the build-up to the festive period fixtures.
“We’ll be training hard, and we’ll probably be training more than we would normally, just to make up for the game that we would have had. We go into every game the same – we just want to win and work hard, which is what we’re good at so we’ll stick to it.”
