U18s | PREVIEW: Sheffield United vs Barnsley

9 December 2016

The key information and statistics ahead of tomorrow's U18s South Yorkshire derby.

Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney take their Barnsley Under 18s squad to Sheffield United tomorrow for a big South Yorkshire derby in the Professional Development League.

After slipping to a narrow defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday last time out, the Reds will be looking to end 2016 on a high.

The meeting between the two rivals will be Barnsley’s final league game of the year and they could move up one place to sixth in the table if other results go their way.

After an excellent start to the season, results have stalled in recent weeks with the Reds managing only one win from their last five matches.

The sides drew 3-3 when they met earlier in the season with a last-minute penalty denying the Reds consecutive victories in the league.

Romal Palmer bagged a brace for the Reds while Cameron Simpson netted what he thought was the winning goal four minutes from time.

Barnsley have not beaten the Blades since February of the 2014/15 season, when they ran out 2-0 winners on their own turf.

That season saw the Reds complete the double over United, securing 2-0 home and away victories as the Reds finished above United in the table.

The fixture is one that Barnsley have proved strong in recently, suffering only one defeat in their last six matches and have conceded more goals than any other side in the division.

Heading into the clash, Sheffield United are second in the table but like the Reds, have been struggling for form in recent weeks after only losing one game since the start of the season.

They, have taken one win from their last five matches, losing three, and as a result, lost their spot at the top of the table.

The Blades have not beaten the Reds at Shirecliffe since 2013, when they secured a 2-0 win against the Reds.

Only Nottingham Forest have scored more goals this season than Sheffield United but no team has conceded fewer goals than the Blades to this point.

Kick off for tomorrow's match is at Shirecliffe is 11am.
